How to switch characters in GTA 5 

Before being able to switch characters, players must progress through the story until all three protagonists are introduced. This happens early in the game, so it won’t take long to unlock the character-switching ability.

How to Switch Characters on Console

To switch characters in GTA 5 on PlayStation or Xbox, follow these steps:

1. While in free roam, press and hold the down button on the d-pad. This will bring up the character switch interface.
2. While still holding down on the d-pad, use the right analog stick to highlight the character you want to play as.
3. Release the down button on the d-pad to confirm your selection and switch to the chosen character.

Alternatively, you can quickly switch to the next character by double-tapping the down button on the d-pad.

How to Switch Characters on PC

For PC players, the process of changing characters in GTA 5 is similar:

1. While in free roam, press and hold the Alt key on your keyboard. This will bring up the character switch menu.

Restrictions on Character Switching

There are certain situations in GTA 5 where character switching may be disabled:
