In the medieval world of Manor Lords, building a formidable army is crucial for protecting your territory and conquering new lands. To create an effective military strategy in Manor Lords, you need to understand all the different types of recruits. So here they are!

Retinue: Elite Professional Soldiers

The Retinue is an elite group of professional soldiers bound to your Manor. This unit comprises court members, nobles, and even members of your own family. Once you construct your first Manor, you automatically receive a default Retinue of five soldiers.

You can further expand your Retinue by hiring additional members. Recruiting new Retinue costs 50 Treasury per soldier, and you can increase the maximum size of your Retinue by constructing Garrison Towers within your Manor.

Militia: Drafted from Your Villagers

In Manor Lords, the Militia is formed from the male villagers living in your settlement. Each Militia unit can have up to 36 men, but the actual number will depend on the available weapons and equipment available in the settlement.

There are four types of Militia units in Manor Lords:

• Militia Footmen: Require sidearms (iron slabs) and small shields (planks).
• Spear Militia: Require spears (iron slabs and planks) and large shields (planks).
• Polearm Militia: Require polearms (iron slabs and planks).
• Archer Militia: Require warbows (planks).

Mercenaries: Hired Professionals

Mercenaries are professional soldiers hired for a monthly fee from your Treasury. This option is particularly useful when you need to quickly respond to a threat or supplement your current forces.

The available Mercenary units and companies change every month, offering a variety of melee and ranged specializations. However, hiring Mercenaries can be costly, so managing your Treasury effectively is essential for this type of Recruit.

Equipping Your Army in Manor Lords

Regardless of the recruit type, equipping your soldiers with appropriate weapons, shields, and armor is crucial for their effectiveness on the battlefield.

Producing these items requires specific burgage plot extensions, such as Blacksmith’s Workshops, Joiner’s Workshops, and Armorer’s Shops.
